I walked into this assignment with the kind of unfocused hunger that usually ends with me eating a sad gas station hot dog, but Alachua had other plans for me. This town runs on its own rhythm, where you can grab a life-changing empanada at Tinker and then chase it with a peanut butter pie the size of a hubcap at The TOP, all without leaving the county line.

The range here stretches from a Parisian-style bistro pouring the best espresso martini I’ve had to a drive-through spot in a parking lot where the chef himself hands you blackened catfish worth a Tampa round trip. I judged a pizza place by its wings and was humbled, and I camped out at a coffee shop with a vanilla latte that made me forget my laptop entirely.

So trust me when I say the hardest part of this list wasn’t eating, it was stopping. Here’s where to point your fork.

I walked into Cilantro Tacos with the kind of unfocused hunger that usually ends with me making deeply questionable decisions, but the menu made my choices easy. The birria tacos with shrimp were a revelation, the shrimp plump and the broth rich enough to make me consider drinking it straight from the bowl. I also ordered the al pastor with pineapple, which had that perfect char and sweetness. The nacho portions are so generous that I will be eating them for the rest of the week. The service was warm and caring, the kind of welcoming that makes you feel like a regular even on your first visit.

I set up my laptop at Doxa Coffee Co. with the intention of being productive, and while I can't promise I was, the vanilla latte was excellent. The modern industrial vibe is surprisingly cozy, and the staff didn't seem to mind me camping out for a few hours. I switched to the blueberry matcha later, which was smooth and not too sweet, a nice change of pace. They only have whole and oat milk, which is fine by me. It's a warm space for slow mornings, and I felt a little guilty leaving my little corner of it to face the day.

The chicken was tasty and so tender it fell off the bone, and the whole place was clean and inviting. It's not trying to be fancy, and that's what I appreciate about it. It's a solid choice for a no-fuss meal that tastes great.

I had to check my passport after walking into Alpin Bistro because I could have sworn I was in Paris. It's an impeccable spot for a date, with an atmosphere that feels both elegant and unpretentious. The French onion soup is a bucket-list item, truly rich and cheesy and perfect. And the espresso martini might be the best I've had. I had the crème brûlée for dessert, and it was stunning, the perfect twist on a classic that had me closing my eyes to focus on the taste.

I drove from Tampa for this place. That is not a typo. The Underground Kitchen is worth it. The blackened catfish is a flavor bomb, and the portions are so big that I had to save half for lunch the next day. The whole experience felt personal, and I even saw the chef bring my food out to the car, which was a nice touch. The curbside pickup was easy, and I will be making the drive again. It's that good.

It is definitely worth the twenty-minute drive from my place. I am adding this to my regular rotation for a casual and satisfying meal.

Unique cocktails that surprisingly work
Large vegetarian and vegan menu
Decadent garlic and goat starter
Massive peanut butter pie portions
Juicy Mastodon burger done right

The TOP is a place I judged by its decor, but the food and drinks are the real stars. I started with the garlic and goat cheese starter, which was decadent and creamy, and I didn't want to share. Their cocktail menu is full of unique drinks that, against all odds, work together. I had the Mastodon burger, which was juicy and cooked just right. I saved room for the peanut butter pie, which is actually enough for a family, but I ate it anyway. A great spot for the adventurous and hungry.

Best empanada I've eaten
Luna’s service was outstanding
Bandeja Paisa packed with flavor
Hot food, never left waiting

I am writing this from a table at Tinker Restaurant, and I have to say the Bandeja Paisa was a beautiful, overwhelming mountain of food that I devoured anyway. The best part, though, was the empanada. It was, without a doubt, the best one I have ever had, with a flaky crust and a savory filling. Our server, Luna, was outstanding and kept my water full and my spirits high. The food came out hot, and I never once felt rushed, even as the place started to fill up. I am still thinking about that empanada.

Seoul Pocha was the answer to a very specific pregnancy craving that I won't detail here, but trust me, they delivered. The Korean food is authentic and the portions are generous enough for two meals. The staff is kind, and the whole place has a family-friendly vibe, even with the karaoke room in the back. My kids, who are picky, couldn't stop raving about the chicken. I am already planning my next visit, and I can't wait to be back. It's a great spot to be happy and full.
